Meet the Founder who Wants to Democratise Legal Services for All: An interview with Docue’s Marko Teppo

Docue was born from the simple yet revolutionary idea that enabling lawyers to digitise legal content and encode it with its own legal logic could help democratise legal services for everyone.

I’m Gustav Wiik, and I am a Customer Success Specialist at Docue. Before I joined the company I barely knew what B2B meant and the world of legal content was completely alien to me. Yet, Docue as an idea, making legal services democratic through digitisation, intrigued me. I set out to learn everything I could about the company and its unique what-for. 

And who better to school me on the Docue story, than the company's founder, Marko Teppo?

Kindly taking time out of his busy schedule Marko sat down with me and filled me in on everything from founding vision to future mission.

So, Marko, how did the idea for setting up Docue come about?

Marko Teppo: I had worked as a police officer for years, but I started studying law because I became interested in the possibility of using law as part of a business. After graduating as a lawyer, I went to work for a large accounting firm and within a short time I worked with about 100 companies. I noticed that the legal needs of companies are similar, there is a lot of repetition in the work of lawyers and the result of the work is almost always a written document.

This is how the idea of ​​Docue was born. As an idea, it is as simple as it is revolutionary: lawyers produce legal content and encode it with legal reasoning. This allows Docue users to create contracts and legal documents as good as a lawyer would make, but without the training or cost of a lawyer. The electronic signature seals the contract and archiving is automatic. It is democratising legal services by digitising them.

How can small businesses make the most of our services?

Marko Teppo: Thanks to Docue, small businesses can manage all administrative documents, employment documents and customer contracts in one place. Users can also use the service's electronic signature to sign their own PDF files and take advantage of Docue’s extensive legal archive. It is the user's very own law library where they can learn at their own pace and according to their specific needs. 

What is your vision for the future of Docue?

Marko Teppo: We want to be the most user-friendly legal services platform on the planet. Every day we are working to improve the platform based on feedback from our users. Continuous improvement is a guiding principle. At the same time, Docue's lawyers are constantly coding new document templates to expand the service. We want to give our users templates they can use for any and every eventual legal agreement - no matter how demanding or complex. Our lawyers at Docue are amazing and they will stop at nothing to anticipate and meet all legal content requirements of our customers. This is the direction we are headed. 

Why did you end up expanding to UK?

Marko Teppo: More than 100,000 users have registered for the service and the user experience has been extremely positive. We decided to expand to the UK because the UK has very specific legal needs and presents an exciting opportunity. 

But wherever we operate, our mission is the same. Docue is an idea that has no geographical limits. We want to empower companies and individuals everywhere to exercise their legal rights with far greater ease and efficiency. We want to democratise legal services for everyone. 

And on this lofty note, I thank Marko for his time. I know he's a very busy man. But he leaves me inspired. It’s fascinating to be part of Docue at this moment — I get to see the vision come to life day to day from inside the company and I am witnessing the Docue idea spreading in real time in the wider world. Today it’s 100,000 users. Some coming-soon tomorrow, it will be one million. 

And along the way it continues to be an amazing journey.
